The Father of CyberPsychology presents the Birth of CyberPsychology

Professor John Suler, Professor of Psychology at Rider University, New Jersey, addressed the future of CyberPsychology from the perspectives of the next generation versus the previous generation, who have seen the internet being invented and adopted. The ‘next' generation (i.e. young people such as students) were the first generation to grow up with the internet and struggle to imagine what life would be like without it. He will go on to discuss the wide variety of experiences that people have online and will elicit the audience's ideas about what is important about their lives online.

By showing a video, entitled ‘The Birth of CyberPsychology', Prof Suler encouraged attendees to think about their own reactions to the video. He has been using this video as a research tool by showing it to various students and observing their responses and reactions to it. Prof Suler will compare and contrast the reactions of the audience in attendance against those of students who he has being engaging.

Speaking ahead of this guest lecture, Prof Suler said, ‘I would like to help the audience conceptualise their reactions to this video as well as describe the younger people's reactions, in terms of "cyberpsychology architecture" which is how cyberspace is a psychological space, an extension of the mind and a transitional space that consists of eight dimensions: identity, social, interactive, text, sensory, temporal, reality, and physical.'

A video recording of Prof Suler's talk will soon be made available online for those who were unable to make the event. The RCSI CyberPsychology Research Centre also hopes to host a live interactive broadcast of the talk with webchat discussion with Prof Suler in the near future.
